A method for determining an initial filter-loading value of an air-moving device that includes imposing a pre-determined inlet restriction value on the device. The method also includes operating the device while the device is arranged to have the pre-determined inlet restriction value and during operating, and performing a measurement process to determine a first value of an operating parameter of the device. The first value of the operating parameter depends on a degree of filter loading of an installed filter. The method further includes performing a determination process to determine the initial filter-loading value based on a first pre-determined relationship between values of the operating parameter and a set of filter-loading values.
