Abstract
A card detection subsystem for control of a payment card reader, where the payment card reader comprises a magnetic stripe reader (MSR), an integrated circuit card (ICC) reader, and a near field communications (NFC) reader, and the NFC reader comprises an antenna. The card detection subsystem includes a processor, a storage, and one or more sensors. The one or more sensors detect a payment card and the antenna is either turned on or turned off based on the detection of the payment card.
Claims20
A device comprising:
- a contactless reader comprising an antenna;
- a contact reader;
- one or more sensors configured to detect a payment card;
- and
- a processor coupled with a storage containing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the device to:
- receive sensor data from the one or more sensors;
- estimate, based at least on the sensor data, respective estimated likelihoods that the payment card will be used with the contactless reader or the contact reader;
- determine, from the estimated likelihoods, whether the contactless reader or the contact reader has a higher likelihood of being used;
- and
- based on a determination that the contact reader has the higher likelihood of being used, pre-emptively disable transmission by the antenna prior to the payment card being read by the contact reader, wherein the pre-emptive disabling of the antenna reduces accidental contactless reading of the payment card during a contact reading of the payment card by the contact reader.
A method comprising:
- receiving sensor data from one or more sensors of an electronic device, the one or more sensors configured to detect a payment card, wherein the electronic device comprises a contact reader and a contactless reader;
- estimating, based at least on the sensor data, respective estimated likelihoods that the payment card will be used with the contactless reader or the contact reader;
- determining, from the estimated likelihoods, whether the contactless reader or the contact reader has a higher likelihood of being used;
- and
- based on a determination that the contact reader has the higher likelihood of being used, pre-emptively disable wireless transmission of the contactless reader prior to the payment card being read by the contact reader, thereby reducing accidental contactless reading of the payment card during a contact reading of the payment card by the contact reader.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a device having a contactless reader comprising an antenna, a contact reader, and one or more sensors, cause the device to:
- receive sensor data from the one or more sensors;
- estimate, based at least on the sensor data, respective estimated likelihoods that a payment card will be used with the contactless reader or the contact reader;
- determine, from the estimated likelihoods, whether the contactless reader or the contact reader has a higher likelihood of being used;
- and
- based on a determination that the contact reader has the higher likelihood of being used, pre-emptively disable transmission by the antenna prior to the payment card being read by the contact card reader to reduce accidental contactless reading during the contact reading.
