A method of making a vacuum insulating panel, the vacuum insulating panel comprising a first substrate, a second substrate, a plurality of spacers provided in a gap between at least the first and second substrates, and a seal provided at least partially between at least the first and second substrates, the seal comprising a seal layer;
- wherein the method comprises:
- providing glass in a location between at least the first and second substrates, the glass to be used in forming the seal layer, and wherein the glass comprises:
- tellurium oxide:
- from about 20-75 wt. %;
- vanadium oxide:
- from about 15-45 wt. %;
- aluminum oxide:
- from about 0-5 wt. %;
- and
- zinc oxide:
- from about 0-10 wt. %;
- wherein the glass comprises less TeO3 than TeO4 in terms of mol % before heating to form the seal layer;
- wherein the glass has a ratio LSPT/DSPT, of the Labino softening point (LSPT) to the Dilatometric softening point (DSPT), in degrees C., from about 1.05 to 1.25;
- heating the glass in order to form the seal layer;
- and
- after forming the seal layer, evacuating the gap to a pressure less than atmospheric pressure.
