Abstract
A monolayer, plant protein based imitation leather material and methods of making same. Embodiments of the method comprise 1) creating a mixture of a one or more plant protein powder, a one or more non-proteinaceous polymer or toughening elastomer, a one or more plasticizer, a one or more cross-linking agent, and a one or more curing agent in an; 2) calendering the mixture into a flat, monolayer sheet at a controlled roll temperature and affixing the sheet onto a surface of a carrier fabric and 3) curing the calendered monolayer sheet by applying heat and pressure for a period of time.

A method of preparing an imitation leather material, comprising:
- mixing (1) plant protein, (2) non-proteinaceous polymer, (3) plasticizer, and (4) crosslinker to form a dough, wherein the non-proteinaceous polymer comprises technically specified or block natural rubber (TSR), ribbed smoked sheet natural rubber (RSS), high ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, low ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, or deproteinized natural rubber latex concentrate, or any combination thereof;
- adding to the dough sulfur-based curing agent and accelerator to form a mixture;
- calendaring the mixture into a flat sheet;
- and
- curing the flat sheet into the imitation leather material.
A method of producing a monolayer imitation leather material, comprising:
- combining into a mixture
- (i) plant protein comprising wheat gluten, brown rice protein, barley protein, maize protein, or any combination thereof,
- (ii) non-proteinaceous polymer comprising technically specified or block natural rubber (TSR), ribbed smoked sheet natural rubber (RSS), high ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, low ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, deproteinized natural rubber latex concentrate with a dry rubber content in a range of about 50% to about 62%, waterborne polyurethane-polyester copolymer, polyurethane-polycarbonate copolymer, polyurethane-polyether copolymer, or any combination thereof,
- (iii) plasticizer,
- (iv) crosslinker, and
- (v) curing agent;
- calendering the mixture into a monolayer sheet;
- affixing the calendered monolayer sheet onto a surface of a carrier fabric;
- and
- curing the calendered monolayer sheet.
An imitation leather material, comprising:
- plant protein, non-proteinaceous polymer, and plasticizer cross-linked by crosslinker, and the non-proteinaceous polymer is further crosslinked by sulfur-based curing agent in the presence of accelerator,
- wherein the non-proteinaceous polymer comprises technically specified or block natural rubber (TSR), ribbed smoked sheet natural rubber (RSS), high ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, low ammonia natural rubber latex concentrate, or deproteinized natural rubber latex concentrate, or any combination thereof.
