Abstract
Provided are devices and methods for preventing an episode of incontinence in an individual in need thereof. The devices comprise a sensor and a stimulator electrode that can be implanted into the body of the individual. Once the device is implanted in the individual, the sensor of the device senses a parameter that is associated with a response from the individual that is intended to prevent an episode of incontinence. Then, the device provides an electrical stimulation using the electrode that, together with the response, helps to prevent the episode of incontinence.
Claims20
A system for ameliorating an episode of incontinence, the system comprising:
- an implantable sensor configured to detect a parameter indicative of a user's physical movement to ameliorate the episode of incontinence;
- at least one implantable stimulator electrode configured to apply an electrical stimulation at or near a nerve;
- and
- an implantable pulse generator operably coupled to the at least one stimulator electrode;
- wherein the implantable pulse generator is configured to provide a base electrical stimulation pattern having one or more of a constant frequency, a constant amplitude, or a constant current;
- wherein in response to detecting the parameter indicative of the user's physical movement to ameliorate the episode of incontinence, the implantable pulse generator is configured to provide a temporary electrical stimulation pattern configured to ameliorate the episode of incontinence;
- and
- wherein the temporary electrical stimulation pattern is at a higher level than the base electrical stimulation pattern.
A system for ameliorating an episode of incontinence, the system comprising:
- an implantable sensor configured to detect a parameter indicative of a user's effort to ameliorate the episode of incontinence;
- at least one implantable stimulator electrode configured to apply an electrical stimulation at or near a nerve;
- and
- an implantable pulse generator operably coupled to the at least one stimulator electrode;
- wherein the implantable pulse generator is configured to provide a base electrical stimulation pattern;
- wherein in response to detecting the parameter indicative of the user's effort to ameliorate the episode of incontinence, the implantable pulse generator is configured to provide a temporary electrical stimulation pattern configured to ameliorate the episode of incontinence and the temporary electrical stimulation pattern changes one or more of a pulse width, a frequency, or an amplitude of electrical stimulation;
- and
- wherein the temporary electrical stimulation pattern is at a higher level than the base electrical stimulation pattern.
