Livestock Water Monitoring System

A system for monitoring livestock, comprising:

• a first base station located proximate a water source in an area of interest and a second base station located proximate a feed source in the area of interest, wherein each of the first base station and the second base station includes:
• a controller having a memory and a processor that executes non-transitory instructions stored in the memory;
• a communications interface that is communicatively coupled to the controller and that has both short-range and long-range wireless communication capabilities;
• and
• a solar power sources that powers one or both of the controller and the communications interface;
• a plurality of tags, wherein each one of the plurality of tags is secured to a respective one of a plurality of livestock animals within the area of interest, wherein each of the plurality of tags includes:
• a memory and a processor that executes non-transitory instructions stored in the memory;
• a communications interface that is communicatively coupled to the processor, that has both short-range and long-range wireless communication capabilities and that wirelessly transmits a unique identifier associated with the respective one of the plurality of livestock animals to the first base station when within a predetermined distance from the first base station and to the second base station when within a predetermined distance from the second base station;
• and
• a solar power source that powers one or both of the processor and the communications interface;
• and
• a water sensor associated with the water source in the area of interest, wherein the water sensor senses one or both of a water level and a water temperature of the water source and wirelessly transmits one or both of the water level and the water temperature of the water source to the first base station;
• wherein the first base station transmits a first wireless alert to a computing device located remotely from the first base station when the first base station determines that the unique identifier has not been received at the first base station within a predetermined period of time;
• wherein the second base station transmits a second wireless alert to the computing device located remotely from the second base station when the second base station determines that the unique identifier has not been received at the second base station within a predetermined period of time;
• and
• wherein the first base station transmits a wireless alert to the computing device when the first base station determines that the water level is outside a predetermined water level threshold and/or that the water temperature is outside a predetermined water temperature threshold.
