Region-by-region illumination control at display device based on per-region brightness

An apparatus comprising:

• a transmissive display having a matrix of pixels arranged in rows and columns;
• a backlight including a plurality of light sources partitioned into a plurality of illumination regions;
• an input interface configured to receive video content as a sequence of frames at a frame rate;
• a user interface displayable on the transmissive display and configured to receive a user input that is used to determine an illumination configuration;
• and
• control circuitry coupled to the backlight, the control circuitry configured to:
• set, based at least on the frame rate and on the user input, the illumination configuration for the backlight, the illumination configuration varying an intensity of the backlight over a frame period based at least in part on the frame rate;
• and
• drive the plurality of light sources according to the illumination configuration while the sequence of frames is displayed on the transmissive display.

A method, comprising:

• receiving video content at an input interface as a sequence of frames at a frame rate;
• receiving, based at least in part on a user interface displayable on a transmissive display, a user input that is used to determine an illumination configuration;
• setting, based at least on the frame rate and on the user input, the illumination configuration for a plurality of backlight light sources, the illumination configuration varying an intensity of the backlight over a frame period based at least in part on the frame rate, the plurality of backlight sources being partitioned into a plurality of illumination regions;
• and
• driving the plurality of backlight light sources according to the illumination configuration while the sequence of frames is displayed on a transmissive display that includes a matrix of pixels arranged in rows and columns.
