Automated laboratory instruments for analysing biological samples and leakage detection methods are described. The automatic laboratory instrument includes a pipette head having a channel connectable to a pipette tip through which fluid is aspirated and dispensed, a flow controller configured to control the flow of fluid through the channel, a pressure sensor configured to detect a pressure within the channel so as to collect pressure data for the channel, and a controller connected to the pressure sensor. The controller may be configured to: receive the pressure data from the pressure sensor, extract a value for each of two or more properties of the received pressure data, compare the extracted values of the two or more properties to respective property thresholds, and record a leakage event when each of the extracted values exceeds its respective property threshold.
