Abstract
A clathrate of 1-methylcyclopropene with α-cyclodextrin, obtained as a solid particulate product, is modified by comminuting, classifying, or both to obtain a modified particulate. When subjected to identical atmospheric disgorgement conditions of humidity and temperature, identical masses of the modified and unmodified particulates exhibit different rates of 1-methylcyclopropene disgorgement. Specifically, we have found that a smaller mean particle size is inversely related to a greater rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release.

A coated substrate comprising a coating affixed to a substrate surface, the coating comprising a mixture of:
- a particulate consisting of a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin and optionally α-cyclodextrin, the particulate having a mean particle size between 1 μm and 20 μm;
- and
- a polymer.
A coated substrate comprising a coating affixed to a substrate surface, the coating comprising a mixture of:
- a polymer;
- a first particulate comprising a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin, the first particulate having a first mean particle size of between 5 μm and 7 μm, or between 6 μm and 8 μm, or between 7 μm and 9 μm, or between 8 μm and 10 μm, or between 9 μm and 11 μm, or between 10 μm and 12 μm, or between 11 μm and 13 μm, or between 12 μm and 14 μm, or between 13 μm and 15 μm, or between 15 μm and 20 μm;
- and
- a second particulate comprising a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin, the second particulate having a second mean particle size of between 5 μm and 7 μm, or between 6 μm and 8 μm, or between 7 μm and 9 μm, or between 8 μm and 10 μm, or between 9 μm and 11 μm, or between 10 μm and 12 μm, or between 11 μm and 13 μm, or between 12 μm and 14 μm, or between 13 μm and 15 μm, or between 15 μm and 20 μm,
- wherein the second mean particle size is different from the first mean particle size.
A coated substrate formed by
- classifying a particulate comprising a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin to obtain a classified particulate;
- combining the classified particulate with a polymer;
- coating the combination onto a substrate;
- and
- affixing the coating to the substrate,
- wherein the classified particulate has a mean particle size that differs by at least 20% from the mean particle size of the unclassified particulate.
A label, comprising:
- a substrate comprising a thermoplastic sheet or film, a woven fabric, a nonwoven fabric, paperboard, cardboard, carton board, corrugated cardboard, or paper, the substrate having a width of about 1 cm to about 152 cm;
- a coating affixed to at least a portion of a first surface of the substrate, the coating comprising a mixture of:
- a first particulate consisting of a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin and optionally α-cyclodextrin, the particulate having a mean particle size of between 5 μm and 7 μm, or between 6 μm and 8 μm, or between 7 μm and 9 μm, or between 8 μm and 10 μm, or between 9 μm and 11 μm, or between 10 μm and 12 μm, or between 11 μm and 13 μm, or between 12 μm and 14 μm, or between 13 μm and 15 μm, or between 15 μm and 20 μm;
- and
- a polymer;
- and
- an adhesive present on a second surface of the substrate;
- wherein the coating is configured to release 1-methylcyclopropene when exposed to disgorgement conditions of ambient pressure, temperature between 0° C. and about 50° C., and relative humidity of about 80% to 100%.
