A circular process for the recycling of mineral waste and/or existing building materials to obtain a lightweight building material having a dry density of from 60 to 1500 kg/m3, including steps of breaking up, crushing, and optionally milling, sorting, washing, filtering, concentrating, drying and/or screening mineral waste, existing building materials and/or soils to obtain a recycled material having a median particle size d50, as measured by laser granulometry, of from 1 μm to 6 mm; mixing 40 to 90 parts by weight of the recycled material, calculated as dry weight, and 10 to 60 parts by weight of a cement; adding a foaming agent, optional additives and water to obtain a suspension; foaming the resulting suspension by physical, chemical or mechanical means; and allowing the foamed suspension to harden and dry. Moreover, a lightweight building material having a dry density of from 60 to 1500 kg/m3 obtainable by the process.
