Abstract
An image forming apparatus includes a first conveying portion provided with a discharge opening, a second conveying portion, a switching unit switched between a first state in which a recording medium is guided to the first conveying portion and a second state in which the recording medium is guided to the second conveying portion, a detecting unit provided in the discharge opening and for detecting the recording medium, a controller for controlling the switching unit, and a discriminating unit for discriminating that the switching unit is abnormal in a case where after the switching unit is controlled by the controller so as to be switched to the second state, a time from a start of detection of the recording medium by the detecting unit to an end of the detection is within a predetermined period.

An image forming apparatus comprising:
- a discharge tray;
- a sheet path through which a sheet passes, the sheet path branching into (1) a first path through which the sheet is discharged to the discharge tray and (2) a second path;
- a switching unit including a flapper, wherein the flapper is configured to move between (1) a first position in which the sheet is conveyed to the first path and (2) a second position in which the sheet is conveyed to the second path;
- a discharge roller pair disposed in the first path and configured to convey the sheet toward a discharge direction such that the sheet is discharged to the discharge tray;
- a detector disposed on a downstream side of the discharge roller pair in the discharge direction, wherein an output state of the detector changes from a first state to a second state when the detector detects the sheet;
- and
- a controller,
- wherein the controller is configured to determine that the switching unit is abnormal when (1) the flapper is in the second position and (2) a time during which the output state of the detector is in the second state exceeds a predetermined time.
An image forming apparatus comprising:
- a discharge tray;
- a sheet path through which a sheet passes, the sheet path branching into (1) a first path through which the sheet is discharged to the discharge tray and (2) a second path;
- a switching unit including a flapper, wherein the flapper is configured to move between (1) a first position in which the sheet is conveyed to the first path and (2) a second position in which the sheet is conveyed to the second path;
- a discharge roller pair disposed in the first path and configured to convey the sheet toward a discharge direction such that the sheet is discharged to the discharge tray;
- a detector disposed on a downstream side of the discharge roller pair in the discharge direction, wherein an output state of the detector changes from a first state to a second state when the detector detects the sheet;
- a notifying portion;
- and
- a controller,
- wherein the controller is configured to control the notifying portion to perform a notification operation indicating that the switching unit is abnormal when (1) the flapper is in the second position and (2) the time during which the output state of the detector is in the second state exceeds the predetermined time.
