Abstract
Covalently linked linear polyethylenimine (PEI) clusters are provided that change conformation depending upon changes in counterion concentrations. The structures may be used for the storage, delivery, and/or transport of substances.

A nanobrush comprising linear polyethyleneimine chains bound to a substrate by a crosslinking agent reactive with a primary amine group, the nanobrush transitionable between a first state and a second state in response to surrounding anion concentrations,
- wherein the anion concentrations is 10 mM to 200 mM.
