Abstract
A method is used to cut a suture. The method provides a drive wire coupled with a cutter. The cutter has a first blade defining a first plane, and a second blade defining a second plane that is non-parallel with the first plane. The first blade and the second blade define an opening. The method hooks a suture into the opening. The method cuts the suture by pulling the drive wire in a proximal direction.
Claims20
An endoscopic suture cutting system comprising:
- a cutter deployment device configured to be inserted into a working channel of a flexible endoscope, the cutter deployment device including:
- a delivery shaft sized for passage through the working channel;
- a drive wire disposed within the delivery shaft and movable proximally and distally along a central axis of the delivery shaft;
- and
- a passive cutter head coupled to a distal end of the drive wire,
- wherein:
- the cutter head includes a suture receiving portion that leads to at least one sharp edge;
- the cutter head is configured to be extended distally from the working channel and retracted proximally by movement of the drive wire;
- and
- the cutter head is configured to sever a suture captured in the suture receiving portion by application of tension to the suture when the drive wire is pulled proximally.
An endoscopic suture cutting device configured for use with a flexible endoscope having a working channel, the device comprising:
- a delivery shaft sized for passage through a working channel;
- a drive wire disposed within the delivery shaft and movable proximally and distally along a longitudinal axis of the delivery shaft;
- and
- a cutter head coupled to a distal end of the drive wire,
- wherein:
- the cutter head includes a proximally-facing suture receiving portion leading to at least one sharp edge;
- the cutter head has a rigid longitudinal traversal length of less than about 8 mm;
- and
- the cutter head is configured to sever a suture captured in the proximally-facing receiving portion by application of tension to the suture when the drive wire is pulled proximally.
A method of cutting a suture, the method comprising:
- providing:
- a drive wire coupled with a cutter having a central axis, wherein the drive wire is offset from the central axis;
- the cutter having a first blade defining a first plane, and a second blade defining a second plane that is non-intersecting with the first plane, the first blade and the second blade defining an asymmetric opening;
- positioning a suture into the opening;
- cutting the suture by pulling the drive wire in a proximal direction.
