Disclosed herein is a method for controlling a pump of a sump system. The method includes transmitting, into a container of the sump system, at least one signal from one or more sensor nodes positioned external to the container. The method further includes receiving a response associated with the transmitted at least one signal. The method further includes detecting a change of at least one characteristic between the at least one transmitted signal and a corresponding received response. The method further includes determining a fluid level factor based on the change of the at least one characteristic. The fluid level factor includes one or more of the fluid level of the container and a rate of change of the fluid level of the container. The method further includes causing the pump of the sump system to activate or deactivate based on the fluid level factor.
