Abstract
A method of forming a glass-based article comprises depositing molten glass onto a first molding member and pressing the molten glass between the first and second molding members by moving the first molding member and the second molding member towards one another. The pressing of the molten glass comprises moving a portion of one of the first and second molding members relative to a remaining portion thereof to form a first reduced-area pressing zone and, after formation of the first reduced-area pressing zone, moving the portion relative to the remaining portion to form a second reduced-area pressing zone where the molten glass is compressed between the first and second molding members.
Claims22
A method of forming a glass-based article, the method comprising:
- depositing molten glass onto a first pressing surface of a first molding member;
- aligning the first molding member with a second molding member, the second molding member comprising a second pressing surface facing the first pressing surface;
- and
- pressing the molten glass between the first pressing surface and the second pressing surface, comprising:
- moving a first portion of the first molding member relative to a second portion of the first molding member to offset the first portion from the second portion;
- moving the second molding member toward the first molding member to a first predetermined minimum separation distance between the first pressing surface and the second pressing surface to form a first reduced-area pressing zone where the molten glass is compressed;
- moving the first portion relative to the second portion to reduce the offset and further moving the second molding member until the second pressing surface is separated from the first pressing surface by a second predetermined minimum separation distance to form a second reduced-area pressing zone between the first pressing surface and the second pressing surface where the molten glass is further compressed, thereby forming the glass-based article;
- and
- cooling a center portion of the glass-based article at a rate less than a second portion of the glass-based article surrounding the center portion while the second pressing surface is separated from the first pressing surface by the second predetermined minimum separation distance.
A method of forming a glass-based article, the method comprising:
- pressing molten glass disposed between a first molding member and a second molding member, the pressing comprising:
- moving a first portion of the first molding member relative to a second portion of the first molding member to offset the first portion from the second portion;
- moving the second molding member toward the first molding member to a first predetermined minimum separation distance between the first portion and the second molding member to form a first reduced-area pressing zone where the molten glass is compressed;
- moving the first portion relative to the second portion to reduce the offset and further moving the second molding member until the second molding member is separated from the second portion by a second predetermined minimum separation distance to form a second reduced-area pressing zone between the second molding member and the second portion where the molten glass is further compressed, thereby forming the glass-based article;
- and
- cooling a center portion of the glass-based article at a rate less than a second portion of the glass-based article surrounding the center portion while the second molding member is separated from the second portion by the second predetermined minimum separation distance.
A method of forming a glass-based article, the method comprising:
- pressing molten glass disposed between a first molding member comprising a first pressing surface and a second molding member comprising a second pressing surface, the pressing comprising:
- moving a first portion of the first molding member relative to a second portion of the first molding member in a pressing direction to offset the first portion from the second portion;
- moving the second molding member toward the first molding member in the pressing direction to a first predetermined minimum separation distance between the first pressing surface and the second pressing surface to form a first reduced-area pressing zone where the molten glass is compressed with a force having a first peak magnitude on the molten glass;
- moving the first portion relative to the second portion to reduce the offset and further moving the second molding member until the second pressing surface is separated from the first pressing surface by a second predetermined minimum separation distance to form a second reduced-area pressing zone where the molten glass is further compressed with a force having a second peak magnitude on the molten glass, thereby forming the glass-based article, and a difference between the first peak magnitude and the second peak magnitude is equal to or less than 15% of the first peak magnitude;
- and
- cooling a center portion of the glass-based article at a rate less than a second portion of the glass-based article surrounding the center portion while the first pressing surface is separated from the second pressing surface by the second predetermined minimum separation distance.
