Abstract
A composition of noni (Morinda citrifolia) concentrate as an anti-diabetic nutraceutical prepared using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. The anti-diabetic nutraceutical is in a form of supercritical carbon dioxide extract and has a strong α-glucosidase inhibition activity characterized by IC50 lower than 50 μg/mL measured in vitro using isolated α-glucosidase enzyme. The extract is useful as anti-diabetic remedy with no acute or sub-acute toxicity and it also lowers blood total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides and increases HDL-C in diabetic mammals.
Claims12
An anti-diabetic composition comprising an extract of Morinda citrifolia prepared using a method of supercritical fluid extraction, said method comprising:
- adding a plant material from Morinda citrifolia to an extraction vessel;
- adding ethanol to the plant material;
- treating the plant material with carbon dioxide supercritical fluid for a period of time sufficient to extract anti-diabetic compounds;
- separating the plant material from the carbon dioxide supercritical fluid;
- and
- removing the carbon dioxide supercritical fluid and ethanol thereby forming the anti-diabetic composition in a form of Morinda citrifolia supercritical fluid extract;
- and wherein:
- inhibition activity of the extract of Morinda citrifolia is characterized by IC50 lower than 50 μg/mL measured in vitro using isolated α-glucosidase enzyme.
