A large ON-state current is obtained through use of an indirect transition semiconductor and variations in electrical characteristics between elements are suppressed. A tunneling current driven element (10) includes a first conductivity type semiconductor layer (1), a second conductivity type semiconductor layer (2) and an intermediate layer in which, in a direction directed from the first conductivity type semiconductor layer (1) toward the second conductivity type semiconductor layer (2), a first base material layer (3a), a quantum well layer (4) and a second base material layer (3b) are laminated in the stated order. The first base material layer (3a) is formed of a first semiconductor material, the second base material layer (3b) is formed of a second semiconductor material, and the quantum well layer (4) is formed of a third semiconductor material of a type different from the first semiconductor material and the second semiconductor material. The third semiconductor material has at least one of a band structure in which a valence band edge is present at an energy position higher than valence band edges of the first semiconductor material and the second semiconductor material and a band structure in which a conduction band edge is present at an energy position lower than conduction band edges of the first semiconductor material and the second semiconductor material.
