Abstract
A process for preparing a fluorinating reagent from a calcium-containing compound is disclosed. The process bypasses the requirement to form hydrofluoric acid. The fluorinating reagent can be used to prepare high-value fluorochemicals.

A method of producing an activated fluorination reagent from a waste stream comprising fluorine, the method comprising
- combining a waste material comprising a first salt comprising calcium and fluorine with a second salt, the second salt comprising an anion, which said anion when combined with Ca2+ to form a third salt has a lattice energy greater than 2450 KJ/mol, to form a salt-waste mixture;
- and
- applying mechanical force to the salt-waste mixture to yield the activated fluorination reagent.
A method of producing an activated fluorination reagent wherein <1 ppm of HF is produced, the method comprising
- combining a first salt comprising calcium and fluorine with a second salt, the second salt comprising an anion, which said anion when combined with Ca2+ to form a third salt has a lattice energy greater than 2450 KJ/mol, to form a salt mixture;
- and
- applying mechanical force to the salt mixture to yield the activated fluorination reagent.
A composition comprising a fluorinating reagent, wherein the fluorinating reagent has an XRPD pattern comprising one or more peaks at 2-theta values of 15.6±0.2° 2θ, 17.5±0.2° 2θ, 23.4±0.2° 2θ, 24.9±0.2° 2θ, 26.6±0.2° 2θ, 28.1±0.2° 2θ, 28.9±0.2° 2θ, 29.3±0.2°20, 29.4±0.2° 2θ, 29.7±0.2° 2θ, 31.3±0.2° 2θ, 35.4±0.2° 2θ, 36.5±0.2° 2θ, 36.7±0.2° 2θ, 38.4=0.2°20, 39.8±0.2°20, 42.8=0.2°20, 46.3±0.2°20, 47.8±0.2° 2θ, 48.2=0.2° 2θ, 48.8±0.2° 2θ, 51.4±0.2°20, 53.2±0.2° 2θ, 54.4±0.2° 2θ, 54.9±0.2° 2θ, 57.5±0.2°20, 58.2±0.2° 2θ, 59.8±0.2° 2θ, 60.9±0.2° 2θ, 62.2±0.2° 2θ, 63.7±0.2° 2θ, 65.5±0.2° 2θ, 66.7±0.2° 2θ, or 67.7±0.2° 2θ.
