Apparatus and methods for lightweight transcoding

A computerized method of transcoding media data in a distributed or virtualized computing environment, comprising:

• receiving, by at least one processor apparatus, a media stream encoded according to a first video format;
• decoding at least a portion of the media stream to obtain intermediate data including motion or transform information;
• processing the intermediate data by a plurality of transcoding instances operating in parallel within the distributed or virtualized computing environment;
• encoding the processed intermediate data into a second video format differing from the first video format;
• assembling the encoded data into a packetized stream;
• and
• transmitting the packetized stream to a destination device via a packet-based network.

A system for generating multiple adaptive-streaming profiles of media content, comprising:

• an input interface configured to receive compressed video content encoded in a first format;
• a profile-management module configured to generate or select a plurality of encoding profiles each corresponding to a target device class, streaming service, or network condition;
• a controller configured to manage transcoding parameters in accordance with the plurality of encoding profiles;
• a transcoder apparatus configured to decode and re-encode the video content to produce a plurality of output streams each corresponding to one of the plurality of encoding profiles;
• and
• a packaging module configured to prepare each output stream for adaptive streaming delivery.

A secure transcoding apparatus configured for rights-controlled content delivery, comprising:

• a decoder configured to receive encrypted or rights-protected media data encoded in a first video format;
• a security or digital-rights-management (DRM) module configured to validate license, key, or entitlement data associated with the media data;
• a processor configured to decode and re-encode the media data into a second video format responsive to successful validation by the DRM module;
• a protected memory or data path configured to store or process the media data during decoding and re-encoding;
• and
• an encryption or packaging module configured to encrypt or otherwise protect the re-encoded media data for delivery to authorized devices.
