A positioning assembly for positioning a tip of an optical fiber comprises: a first positioning element configured to define and adjust a position of the tip of the optical fiber, a first piezoelectric element having a first axis of expansion and/or contraction, a second piezoelectric element having a second axis of expansion and/or contraction parallel to the first axis, a first plate contacting the first piezoelectric element, and a second plate contacting the second piezoelectric element. The first and second plates are mechanically coupled to the first positioning element, and each act as a lever such that movement of the first and/or second plate in a direction along the first axis, induced by expansion and/or contraction of the first and/or second piezoelectric element respectively, results in movement of the first positioning element. The movement of the first positioning element has a component perpendicular to the first axis.
