A process for direct lithium extraction from a lithium-bearing feed solution is disclosed. The process comprises contacting the feed solution with a lithium selective adsorbent in a process circuit including an adsorption loading zone to selectively load lithium ions and residual impurities onto the adsorbent. A chloride salt wash solution, such as sodium chloride or potassium chloride, is supplied to a salt displacement zone to displace residual impurities from the loaded adsorbent. An eluate solution is then supplied to a lithium product elution zone to displace the chloride salt wash solution and deintercalate lithium from the adsorbent, thereby producing a lithium eluate with an increased lithium-to-impurity ratio. At least a portion of the displaced chloride salt wash solution containing impurities is recycled to the feed solution or the process circuit. The process may further include monitoring and regulating process parameters, pre-treating the feed solution, and post-processing the lithium eluate to produce battery-grade lithium compounds. The process is applicable to various circuit configurations and feedstock sources.
