Systems and methods for wedge-based prediction mode signaling

A method of video encoding performed at a computing system having memory and one or more processors, the method comprising:

• receiving video data comprising a plurality of blocks, including a current block;
• partitioning the current block into a first section and a second section according to a first partition angle and a partition distance;
• encoding the first section in accordance with a first predictor and encoding the second section in accordance with a second predictor;
• generating a first syntax element indicating a partition group index corresponding to a first partition group from a plurality of partition groups, wherein each partition group includes a plurality of partition angles;
• generating a second syntax element indicating the first partition angle from the first partition group;
• and
• generating a third syntax element indicating the partition distance.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing a video bitstream that is generated by a video encoding method and one or more instructions, the instructions when executed by a processor, cause a computing system to generate the video bitstream, the video bitstream comprising:

• coded information corresponding to a plurality of blocks, including a current block;
• a first syntax element indicating a partition group index corresponding to a first partition group from a plurality of partition groups, wherein each partition group includes a plurality of partition angles;
• a second syntax element indicating a first partition angle from the first partition group;
• and
• a third syntax element indicating a partition distance;
• wherein the video encoding method comprises:
• partitioning the current block into a first section and a second section according to the first partition angle and the partition distance;
• and
• encoding the first section in accordance with a first predictor and encoding the second section in accordance with a second predictor.
