Smartphone that Displays a Virtual Image for a Telephone Call

A method comprising:

• capturing, with one or more cameras of a smartphone of a first user, video of an environment where the first user is located;
• receiving, at the smartphone, a telephone call from an electronic device of a second user;
• and
• displaying, on a display of the smartphone before the first user answers the telephone call from the second user, the video of the environment that includes a virtual image of the second user at a location in the environment where a voice of the second user will externally localize outside the head of the first user in the environment in response to the first user answering the telephone call from the electronic device of the second user.

A method comprising:

• capturing, with one or more cameras of a smartphone of a first user, video of an environment of the first user;
• displaying, with a display of the smartphone and before the first user accepts an electronic call from an electronic device of a second user, the video of the environment that includes a virtual image of the second user where a voice of the second user will externally localize as binaural sound to the first user when the first user accepts the electronic call;
• and
• processing, by one or more processors in the smartphone and during the electronic call, the voice of the second user that externally localizes as the binaural sound to the first user at the virtual image of the second user that appears in the environment of the first user.

A smartphone comprising:

• a camera that captures video of an environment of a first user;
• a display that displays, before the first user answers a telephone call from a second user, a virtual image that appears at a location in the video of the environment where a voice of the second user will externally localize to empty space outside a head of the first user when the first user answers the telephone call;
• and
• one or more processors that process the voice of the second user in binaural sound that externally localizes to the empty space outside the head of the first user where the smartphone displays the second user during the telephone call.
