Described techniques enable replacement of tape storage, e.g., for intermediate term processing and long term storage, using simulated tapes that may be stored using cloud memory or other suitable storage techniques. In described techniques, an open request for a dataset of an application may be determined. The dataset may be determined to be written to a simulated tape, and a buffer may be allocated in response to the open request. Channel command words of a channel program governing writing of the dataset may be intercepted. Data of the dataset may be written to the buffer based on the channel command words, and the data of the dataset may be copied from the buffer to the simulated tape.
