Optical units and methods implemented thereof

An optical unit comprising:

• an optical element comprising:
• a first substrate and a second substrate;
• a liquid crystal material comprising mesogens;
• at least one first electrode deposited on a surface of the first substrate and disposed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal material;
• at least one second electrode deposited on a surface of the second substrate and disposed between the second substrate and the liquid crystal material;
• a test circuit comprising:
• a first resistor formed by a trace of the at least one first electrode;
• a second resistor formed by a trace of the at least one second electrode;
• and
• a test capacitor formed by the liquid crystal material,
• wherein the first resistor, the second resistor, and the test capacitor are connected in series, the first resistor being connected to a first terminal of the test capacitor, and the second resistor being connected to a second terminal of the test capacitor;
• and
• at least one processor configured to:
• apply a first input signal to the test circuit to measure a first output signal, and determine a reference peak voltage of the first output signal at a first time instant;
• apply a second input signal to the test circuit to measure a second output signal, and determine a test peak voltage of the second output signal at a second time instant;
• determine a variation in a capacitance of the mesogens between the first time instant and the second time instant, by comparing the test peak voltage with the reference peak voltage;
• determine a state of the mesogens at the second time instant, based on the variation in the capacitance of the mesogens;
• and
• adjust at least one driving parameter of a drive signal to drive at least one of:
• the at least one first electrode, the at least one second electrode, to change at least one optical parameter of the optical element, based on the state of the mesogens.
