Abstract

System and for interment of cremated remains with module above-ground columbariums. Columbariums are formed from individual modular blocks that are stacked on top of and next to one other. Spacers may be used between adjacent blocks in the vertical stack to enable two adjacent units to be interleaved. Support rods may extend through interleaved portions to enable adjacent units to be rotated with respect to each other as well as penetrating down into a below-ground foundation to provide resistance to overturning. Modularity may be achieved at the single-block level where each block contains only one niche, minimizing the capital expenditure operators must make to increase capacity for the facility. Blocks may be offset from each other in one end plane to create the effect of a natural stone wall having a non-planar surface.

A modular columbarium unit:

a first elongated rectangular interment block having a length, a width and a height with a first end, and an opposing second end;
a first bore hole bored into the first end and extending more than half of the length into the center of elongated rectangular interment block along its length;
a second bore hole concentric with a portion of the first bore hole at the first end and having an outer diameter larger than the first bore hole;
a cap portion seated in the block at the second bore hole;
and
a third bore hole, proximate to the second end and transverse to the first and second bore holes and located at a distance D2 from the second end, the third bore hole extending completely through the height of the block.
