A water electrolysis electrode includes an electroconductive substrate and a layered double hydroxide layer. The layered double hydroxide layer is disposed on a surface of the electroconductive substrate. An extinction coefficient k800 of the layered double hydroxide layer at an wavelength of 800 nm is 0.08 or more.

A water electrolysis electrode, comprising:
- an electroconductive substrate;
- and
- a layered double hydroxide layer disposed on a surface of the electroconductive substrate, wherein
- an extinction coefficient of the layered double hydroxide layer at a wavelength of 800 nm is 0.08 or more.
