Abstract
Method and apparatus for converting waste solid sustainable carbon material to chemical products is described herein. The methods add hydrocarbon derived from fossil sources to gas derived from gasifying waste solid sustainable carbon material to enhance hydrogen availability, and in some cases carbon availability, for production of the chemical products. Biomass is used to provide energy to dry solid sustainable carbon material to form dry sustainable carbon material to gasify. Carbon dioxide made by the process is at least partially sequestered to yield a chemical manufacturing process with environmental burden substantially less than conventional processes. Use of the hydrocarbon boosts yield of final products.

A process for making chemical products from solid sustainable carbon materials, the process comprising:
- converting a first solid sustainable carbon to energy and an exhaust comprising CO2;
- drying a second solid sustainable carbon material to produce a dried solid sustainable carbon material;
- sequestering at least a portion of CO2 from the exhaust in an underground sequestration facility;
- gasifying the dried solid sustainable carbon material to produce a first stream comprising CO, H2, CO2, and a mixture of organic compounds;
- converting the organic compounds in the first stream and hydrocarbon in a second stream into CO, H2, and CO2, to form one or more gas streams comprising CO, H2, and CO2;
- converting at least a portion of CO in the one or more gas streams to CO2 to form one or more converted streams;
- separating CO2 from the one or more converted streams to form a conversion feed;
- sequestering at least a portion of the separated CO2 in the underground sequestration facility;
- and
- producing one or more carbon-containing chemical products from the conversion feed,
- wherein more than 25% of the net atomic carbon input to the process is derived from fossil sources and no more than 15% of carbon in the carbon-containing chemical products is derived from fossil sources.
A process for making carbon-containing chemical products from solid sustainable carbon materials, the process comprising:
- gasifying biomass to produce a gasification stream comprising CO, H2, and CO2;
- converting at least 70% of the CO in the gasification stream into additional CO2 and H2 to form a converted gasification stream;
- using a single reactor to make carbon-containing chemical products from the converted gasification stream,
- wherein
- at least 70% of the carbon in the converted gasification stream is in the form of CO2;
- a ratio of H2:CO in the converted gasification stream is at least 2.5;
- and
- forming the converted gasification stream comprises removing a portion of CO2 from the gasification stream, adding H2 to the gasification stream, or both.
A process for making liquid hydrocarbons, the process comprising:
- gasifying a solid sustainable carbon material to produce a first stream comprising CO, H2, CO2, and a mixture of organic compounds, wherein the first stream is tar-free;
- converting the organic compounds in the first stream and hydrocarbon in a second stream into CO, H2, and CO2, to form one or more gas streams comprising CO, H2, and CO2;
- separating CO2 from the one or more converted streams to form a conversion feed;
- sequestering at least a portion of the separated CO2 in the underground sequestration facility;
- and
- performing a reverse water-gas shift reaction, a steam reforming reaction, and a dry reforming reaction in a single reactor using the conversion feed to produce a syngas having a ratio of H2:CO that is between 1.5 and 3.0;
- performing a Fischer-Tropsch process on the syngas to produce liquid hydrocarbons, light hydrocarbons, and waxes;
- and
- upgrading the waxes to additional liquid hydrocarbons and additional light hydrocarbons, hydrotreating the liquid hydrocarbons and the additional liquid hydrocarbons;
- and
- separating the liquid hydrocarbons and the light hydrocarbons and recycling the light hydrocarbons.
