Abstract
An exchange fluid having one or more amino acid for removing carbon dioxide from a solid sorbent and systems containing the same are disclosed. The exchange fluid may further include a neutralizing base for neutralizing the amino acid. The system may further employ an electrochemical cell to regenerate the exchange fluid by removing carbon dioxide from the exchange fluid without employing degrading temperatures and pressures.
Claims20
An atmospheric carbon dioxide capture system comprising:
- a compartment defining (i) a receptacle, (ii) a gas flow input to receive atmospheric air, the gas flow input arranged to pass a gas flow along a CO2 sorbent in the receptacle, and (iii) an inlet to receive an exchange fluid including an amino acid in the receptacle such that the exchange fluid contacts the CO2 sorbent;
- and
- an electrochemical regenerative system in fluid communication with the compartment to receive the exchange fluid from the compartment.
A method of direct air capture comprising:
- removing carbon dioxide from atmospheric air by contacting a solid sorbent having amine functionality with atmospheric air;
- removing carbon dioxide from the solid sorbent by contacting the solid sorbent with an aqueous exchange fluid including at least one amino acid after contacting with atmospheric air;
- and
- removing carbon dioxide from the aqueous exchange fluid by feeding the aqueous exchange fluid to an electrodialysis cell.
An exchange fluid for an atmospheric carbon dioxide capture system comprising:
- an aqueous solution having at least one amino acid with an adsorption enthalpy of at least 30 kJ/mol, and a neutralizing base.
