Abstract
Within examples, a surgical device with an embedded sensor system for performing hip replacements is described. This device mitigates fracturing of the mid metaphyseal/diaphyseal region of the femur, and ensures adequate press-fit of the component into the bone. The device relays information regarding forces experienced by the patient's bone to a separate data acquisition device and displays it on an interface. This information is used by the surgeon to determine the force present inside of the patient's bone during broaching, and can then be used to provide better care, and mitigate fractures due to overloading in the bone.
Claims20
A surgical device comprising:
- a body having a first side, a second side, and a proximal portion;
- and
- multiple sensors positioned in the body between the first side and the second side, each of the multiple sensors detect a respective compression of the first side toward the second side based on a position of the multiple sensors in the body and each of the multiple sensors output a signal indicative of the respective compression.
A system comprising:
- a surgical device having a body with a first side, a second side, and a proximal portion, and having multiple sensors positioned in the body between the first side and the second side, each of the multiple sensors detect a respective compression of the first side toward the second side based on a position of the multiple sensors in the body and each of the multiple sensors output a signal indicative of the respective compression;
- and
- one or more processors to receive the signal output from each of the multiple sensors and to determine information indicative of a force transferred to a bone into which the surgical device is impacted.
