Aspects of the disclosure are directed to beam configurations for radio frequency sensing operations. In an aspect, a sensing transmit node transmits first sensing signals on multiple transmit beams that each comprise (e.g., encoded or scrambled with) a respective transmit beam identifier. A sensing receive node measures the first sensing signals on multiple receive beams and reports to a sensing management component. The sensing management component selects a subset of the multiple receive and transmit beams, after which the sensing transmit node transmits second sensing signals on the transmit beam subset and the sensing receive node measures the second sensing signals on the receive beam subset. Such aspects may provide various technical advantages, such as improved sensing accuracy, reduced sensing latency, etc., particularly for communications systems utilizing mmWave and/or integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems.
