Abstract
Force coupling or torque coupling assemblies, apparatuses, systems, and methods include assemblies that each include superhard contact elements. At least some of the superhard contact elements may be configured to remain in contact with each other when a rotational force and/or a thrust force is applied between the assemblies.
Claims20
A force coupling assembly, comprising:
- a first assembly including first superhard contact elements;
- a second assembly including second superhard contact elements, at least some of the first superhard contact elements and the second superhard contact elements configured to transfer a torque between the first assembly and the second assembly when a rotational force is applied to at least one of the first assembly or the second assembly;
- and
- one or more thrust bearing elements comprising additional superhard contact elements, the additional superhard contact elements positioned and configured to support the force coupling assembly when an axial loading is applied between the first assembly and the second assembly.

A method of transferring force, the method comprising:
- transferring a torque from one of an inner assembly or an outer assembly to the other of the inner assembly or the outer assembly via inner superhard contact elements coupled to the inner assembly and outer superhard contact elements coupled to the outer assembly;
- and
- transferring a thrust force from one of the inner assembly or the outer assembly to the other of the inner assembly or the outer assembly via the inner superhard contact elements coupled to the inner assembly and the outer superhard contact elements coupled to the outer assembly.
A method of providing a force coupling assembly, the method comprising:
- coupling first superhard contact elements to an inner support ring of an inner assembly;
- coupling second superhard contact elements to an outer support ring of an outer assembly;
- and
- positioning the inner assembly at least partially within the outer assembly to transfer a torque between the inner assembly and the outer assembly via at least some of the first superhard contact elements and the second superhard contact elements when a rotational force is applied to the force coupling assembly and to transfer an axial thrust force between the inner assembly and the outer assembly.
