Abstract
Described herein are proportionally controlled caps for spray paint cans that can provide a variety of spray effects and/or spread in the spray of paint without changing caps. The disclosed proportionally controlled caps include actuating elements that change the spread in spray paint to achieve a targeted spread. The cap includes an actuator button that is configured to move relative to a main body to cause a needle valve to change the spread in paint leaving the needle valve. The disclosed caps for spray paint cans can be configured to fit typical spray paint cans so that the disclosed caps can be used to replace the typical caps that come with spray paint cans, enabling typical spray paint cans to achieve a variety of spray effects and/or spreads in spray paint with a single cap.

A method for proportionally controlling paint from a spray paint can using a proportionally controlled cap, the method comprising:
- responsive to an actuator button of the proportionally controlled cap being pressed down, mixing gas and paint in a delivery tube of the proportionally controlled cap;
- delivering a mixture of gas and paint from the delivery tube to a valve chamber of the proportionally controlled cap, where the mixture is held prior to delivery out of a needle valve of the proportionally controlled cap due to a needle valve needle of the proportionally controlled cap closing the needle valve;
- responsive to the actuator button being slid away from the needle valve while being held down, retracting the needle valve needle to open the needle valve;
- releasing a first targeted spray pattern with the actuator button slid to a first position;
- and
- releasing a second targeted spray pattern with the actuator button slid to a second position further away from the needle valve, the second targeted spray pattern being wider than the first targeted spray pattern.
