A battery electric vehicle controlled in control modes including a manual mode in which an electric motor is controlled so as to simulate an action of a virtual vehicle equipped with a virtual engine includes: a transmission configured to change a gear ratio between the electric motor and a drive wheel; a clutch provided between the electric motor and the transmission; a clutch operation device; and a control device including a processor. The processor is configured to communicate with the clutch and the clutch operation device. The processor is configured to, in the manual mode, control the clutch according to a command from the clutch operation device. The processor is configured to, even in the manual mode, at the time of starting of the battery electric vehicle, start the battery electric vehicle by controlling the clutch without depending on the command from the clutch operation device.
