Abstract

Adapters are used in recessed lighting applications with structural ceilings, such as, but not limited to, wood ceilings. The adapters are configured to be attached to a structural ceiling and to also be attached to a flangeless-trim-subassembly. A light module may be attached to the flangeless-trim-subassembly (that is attached to an adapter that is attached to a structural ceiling). The adapters are further configured to provide for some vertical adjustment as between the structural ceiling and the flangeless-trim-subassembly, which permits the adapters to be used on variety of ceilings with different thicknesses. The adapters may use vertical slots to achieve the vertical adjustability. One embodiment of the adapter may use vertically slotted L-brackets; and another adapter embodiment may use vertical slots in a collar. Adapters may have overall circular, cylindrical, or rectangular prism shapes.

Dependent claims

An adapter that is configured to be attached to a flangeless-trim-subassembly and that is configured to be attached to a structural-ceiling, wherein the adapter comprises:

a sleeve that is configured to house at least a majority of the flangeless-trim-subassembly within a hollow interior volume of the sleeve, wherein the sleeve comprises the hollow interior volume, wherein the sleeve comprises at least one sidewall, wherein the at least one sidewall at least substantially encloses the at least the majority of the flangeless-trim-subassembly around sides of the at least the majority of the flangeless-trim-subassembly, wherein the sleeve comprises structure that is configured to receive an element of the flangeless-trim-subassembly for attaching the flangeless-trim-subassembly to the sleeve;
and
at least one L-bracket that comprises a first-portion and a second-portion, wherein the first-portion is configured to be attached to the structural-ceiling, wherein the second-portion is configured to be attached to the sleeve.

An adapter that is configured to be attached to a flangeless-trim-subassembly and that is configured to be attached to a structural-ceiling, wherein the adapter comprises:

a flange-with-collar-member, wherein the flange-with-collar-member comprises a flange-region and a collar-region, wherein the flange-region is at least substantially flat and with a flange shape surrounding a largest-central-hole of the flange-with-collar-member, wherein the flange-region is configured to be fixedly attached the structural-ceiling;
wherein the collar-region is a sidewall that extends orthogonally upwards from the flange-region at the largest-central-hole, wherein the collar-region comprises at least one tab with at least one hole, wherein the at least one tab extends upwards from a top of the sidewall;
and
an adjustable-collar-member that comprises an upper-sidewall and a lower-sidewall, wherein a transverse-dimension of the upper-sidewall is larger than a transverse-dimension of the lower-sidewall, wherein extending from a top of the upper-sidewall is at least one protrusion, wherein the at least one protrusion is configured to be attached to the at least one hole of the at least one tab, wherein the adjustable-collar-member comprises the at least one protrusion;
wherein the adjustable-collar-member comprises structure that is configured to receive an element of the flangeless-trim-subassembly for attaching the flangeless-trim-subassembly to the adjustable-collar-member.
