Abstract
Described herein are two-part epoxy coating compositions for producing an adherent coating for substrates and articles such as flooring and large liquid storage tanks. The two-part epoxy coating composition includes a first liquid comprising a polyepoxide having a described formula and having an estrogenic agonist activity less than that of bisphenol S, and a second liquid comprising a curing agent configured to react with the polyepoxide under ambient conditions.
Claims19
A two-part epoxy floor coating composition comprising:
- a first liquid comprising a polyepoxide of Formula (I):
- wherein:
- each oxygen atom attached to phenylene groups in Formula (I) is present in an ether or ester linkage;
- each R1 is independently an atom other than hydrogen or group having an atomic weight of at least 15 Daltons;
- v is independently 1 to 4;
- n is 0 or 1, with the proviso that if n is 0, the phenylene groups depicted in Formula (I) can optionally join to form a fused ring system;
- w is 4 or 3 if n is 0 and the phenylene groups form the fused ring system;
- R2, if present, is preferably a divalent group;
- t is 0 or 1;
- two or more R1 groups or R1 and R2 groups can optionally join to form one or more cyclic groups;
- s is 1;
- R3, if present, is a divalent organic group, and
- each R4 is independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a hydrocarbon group that may include one or more heteroatoms,
- wherein the polyepoxide of Formula (I) has an estrogenic agonist activity less than that of bisphenol S;
- and
- a second liquid comprising a curing agent configured to react with the polyepoxide under ambient conditions.

A flooring system comprising:
- a substrate comprising at least part of a floor surface;
- an adherent coating on the floor surface, wherein the adherent coating is derived from a two-part epoxy composition comprising:
- a first liquid comprising a polyepoxide of Formula (I):
- wherein:
- each oxygen atom attached to phenylene groups in Formula (I) is present in an ether or ester linkage;
- each R1 is independently an atom other than hydrogen or group having an atomic weight of at least 15 Daltons;
- v is independently 1 to 4;
- n is 0 or 1, with the proviso that if n is 0, the phenylene groups depicted in Formula (I) can optionally join to form a fused ring system;
- w is 4 or 3 if n is 0 and the phenylene groups form the fused ring system;
- R2, if present, is preferably a divalent group;
- t is 0 or 1;
- two or more R1 groups or R1 and R2 groups can optionally join to form one or more cyclic groups;
- s is 1;
- R3, if present, is a divalent organic group and
- each R4 is independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a hydrocarbon group that may include one or more heteroatoms,
- wherein the polyepoxide of Formula (I) has an estrogenic agonist activity less than that of bisphenol S;
- and
- a second liquid comprising a curing agent configured to react with the polyepoxide under ambient conditions.
