Abstract
Benzotriazole vinylic monomers having an increased solubility in ophthalmic device material formulations relative to certain other benzotriazole vinylic monomers are disclosed. Such benzotriazole vinylic monomers are useful for fabricating various ophthalmic devices including hydrogel contact lenses such as silicone hydrogel contact lenses and can have a high relative ultraviolet and/or High-energy visible light (UV/HEVL) absorption.

A benzotriazole of Formula (I), (II) or (III):
- wherein R1 represents C4-C12 t-alkyl;
- R2 represents C4-C12 alkylene, —(R′2O)n—, wherein R′2 represents a C1-C4 branched or linear alkylene, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4;
- X represents O or NR when R2 is C4-C12 alkylene, otherwise X is a direct bond to R2 when R2 is —(R′2O)n—;
- R represents H, or a C1-C6 alkyl;
- and R3 represents H, or CH3.
An ophthalmic device comprising a crosslinked polymeric material that incorporates a first benzotriazole of Formula (I), (II) or (III)
- wherein R1 represents C4-C12 t-alkyl;
- R2 represents C4-C12 alkylene, —(R′2O)n—, wherein R′2 represents a C1-C4 branched or linear alkylene, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4;
- X represents O or NR when R2 is C4-C12 alkylene, otherwise X is a direct bond to R2 when R2 is —(R′2O)n—;
- R represents H, or a C1-C6 alkyl;
- and R3 represents H, or CH3,
- wherein the ophthalmic device is selected from the group consisting of an intraocular lens;
- a contact lens;
- a keratoprosthesis;
- and a corneal inlay or ring.
A process of preparing an ophthalmic device, the process comprising:
- copolymerizing a polymerizable composition comprising:
- (i) a vinylic crosslinker;
- (ii) one or more hydrophilic vinylic monomers;
- (iii) optionally one or more hydrophobic vinylic monomers;
- (iv) a first benzotriazole of Formula (I), (II) or (III)
- wherein R1 represents C4-C12 t-alkyl;
- R2 represents C4-C12 alkylene, —(R′2O)1—, wherein R′2 represents a C1-C4 branched or linear alkylene, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4;
- X represents O or NR when R2 is C4-C12 alkylene, otherwise X is a direct bond to R2 when R2 is —(R′2O)1—;
- R represents H, or a C1-C6 alkyl;
- and R3 represents H, or CH3;
- and
- (v) optionally a second benzotriazole of Formula (IV)
- wherein R5 represents C1-C3 alkylene;
- R4 represents H, CH3, CH3O, F, Cl, Br, I, or CF3;
- and R6 represents H, or CH3.
