Abstract
Systems and methods for providing and using improved retaining drivers and screws. An undercut feature of the bone screw allows a corresponding selectively protruding retaining feature of the driver engage the undercut feature to retain the bone screw on the driver until selectively released.
Claims20
A retaining driver comprising:
- a shaft comprising:
- a proximal end;
- a distal end;
- and
- an articulating joint on the shaft configured to facilitate transference of rotational torque at the proximal end to the distal end even when the proximal end and the distal end are not fully coaxial;
- a channel extending within the shaft between the distal end and the proximal end;
- a retaining tip disposed at the distal end, wherein the retaining tip comprises:
- a drive having a geometric profile;
- and
- a window;
- and
- a retaining element configured to selectively protrude from the window.

- a channel extending within the shaft between the distal end and the proximal end;
- a retaining tip disposed at the distal end, wherein the retaining tip comprises:
- a geometric profile;
- and
- a window defining a passage between the channel and a side of the retaining tip;
- and
- a retaining element disposed within the passage and configured to selectively protrude from the window;
- and
- a bone screw comprising:
- a threaded shaft;
- a screw head coupled to the threaded shaft, wherein the screw head defines:
- a drive feature configured to receive the drive, the drive feature having a drive feature perimeter configured to correspond with the geometric profile;
- and
- an undercut feature configured to receive the retaining element of the retaining driver, thereby selectively coupling the bone screw to the retaining driver.

- a channel extending within the shaft between the distal end and the proximal end;
- a retaining tip disposed at the distal end, wherein the retaining tip comprises:
- a geometric profile;
- and
- a window defining a passage between the channel and a side of the retaining tip;
- a retaining element disposed within the passage and configured to selectively protrude from the window but not to pass entirely through the window;
- a trigger disposed on the shaft;
- an actuator at least partially disposed within the channel, the actuator being configured to selectively cause the retaining element to protrude from the window in response to activation of the trigger;
- and
- an articulating joint on the shaft configured to facilitate transference of rotational torque at the proximal end to the distal end even when the proximal end and the distal end are not fully coaxial;
- and
- a bone screw comprising:
- a threaded shaft;
- a screw head coupled to the threaded shaft, wherein the screw head defines:
- a drive feature configured to receive the drive, the drive feature having a drive feature perimeter configured to correspond with the geometric profile;
- and
- a plurality of undercut features disposed around the drive feature perimeter, each of the plurality of undercut features being configured to receive the retaining element of the retaining driver, thereby selectively coupling the bone screw to the retaining driver.
