Abstract
A suture retention device includes a housing having one or more suture slots. The device also includes a plunger with suture slots. The plunger is slidably disposed in a channel in the housing and when the housing suture slots are aligned with the plunger suture slots, a suture filament may be disposed in the slots. When the plunger is actuated so that the housing suture slots are misaligned with the plunger suture slots, the suture filament is captured between the plunger and the housing preventing movement of the suture filament.

(canceled)
A knotless system for closing a vascular access site in a patient, wherein the vascular access site provides access to a blood vessel having a longitudinal axis, the system comprising:
- an elongate suture filament having a first free end and a second free end;
- and
- a suture retention device having an open position and a closed position, wherein the suture retention device is coupled to the elongate suture filament without knots,
- wherein in the open position the elongate suture filament is free to move, and wherein in the closed position the elongate suture filament is constrained from movement,
- wherein the elongate suture filament is configured to be coupled to tissue adjacent the vascular access site in a figure of infinity stitch pattern having a first loop and a second loop, so that when under tension the first loop and the second loop apply a compressive force inward toward the vascular access site, and the compressive force directed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the blood vessel, and
- wherein the compressive force tightens the tissue adjacent the vascular access site and closes the vascular access site to facilitate hemostasis.
A knotless method for closing a vascular access site in a patient, wherein the vascular access site provides access to a blood vessel having a longitudinal axis, the method comprising:
- suturing an elongate suture filament having a first free end and a second free end, through tissue adjacent the vascular access site in a figure of infinity stitch pattern having a first loop and a second loop;
- tensioning the first loop and the second loop and causing a compressive force inward toward the vascular access site, and wherein the compressive force is also directed transverse to the longitudinal axis of the blood vessel;
- closing the vascular access site due to the compressive force tightening the tissue;
- coupling the elongate suture filament with a suture retention device;
- and
- constraining the elongate suture filament to maintain the compressive force by actuating the suture retention device from an open position to a closed position, wherein in the open position the elongate suture filament is free to move, and in the closed position the elongate suture filament is constrained from movement without knots.
