Abstract
Disclosed is a dissolvable, gel-forming film, and methods for its use, comprising a water-soluble cellulose ether, a hydrophilic rheological modifying agent, and an active proteolytic enzyme or other drug substance. The gel-forming film has a water content of less than 15% w/w and is capable of forming a hydrogel when contacted with water or other aqueous medium. The disclosed films achieve delivery of stable proteolytic enzymes to the desired site of action in a manner that provides uniform delivery of the enzymes.

1-33. (canceled)
A method of treating a chronic wound in need of debridement, the method comprising:
- a) contacting at least a portion of the wound comprising non-viable tissue with a composition comprising a hydrogel and a protease solution to digest fibrin, collagen, and elastin of the non-viable tissue;
- and
- b) removing the digested non-viable tissue from the wound to debride the wound,
- wherein digestion and removal of the non-viable tissue inhibits bacterial growth in the wound and promotes wound healing.
A method of reducing bacterial growth in a chronic wound, the method comprising:
- a) contacting at least a portion of the wound comprising non-viable tissue with a composition comprising a hydrogel and a protease solution to digest fibrin, collagen, and elastin of the non-viable tissue;
- and
- b) removing the digested non-viable tissue from the wound to debride the wound,
- wherein digestion and removal of the non-viable tissue inhibits bacterial growth in the wound.
