Abstract
Implants, systems, and methods for securing a flexible band, thereby providing a desired correction to the spine. The implant may secure the flexible band to a spinal rod and/or a pedicle screw. The implant has a locking mechanism to secure the band. The band may be looped around bony anatomy and tensioned to achieve correction and provide fixation as an alternative or supplement to pedicle screws and spinal rods during spinal deformity surgery. Tensioners may be used that allow for multiple positions for attachment between the tensioner and a band clamp inserter.
Claims20
A method for securing a flexible band to a spinal rod, said method comprising:
- feeding a first free end of the flexible band through a main body of a band clamp;
- passing the first free end of the flexible band around bony anatomy of the posterior spine creating a loop such that a middle portion of the flexible band contacts bone;
- passing the first free end of the flexible band back through a band slot of the band clamp;
- positioning the band clamp along the spinal rod such that the spinal rod is accepted into a rod slot of the band clamp;
- tightening a first threaded locking component in the band clamp to secure the spinal rod in the rod slot to the band clamp;
- tensioning, via a tensioner, the flexible band by providing a tensile force to the first free end of the flexible band thereby causing the loop to become tight around the bony anatomy;
- tightening the second threaded locking component in the band clamp to force a saddle into contact with the flexible band in the band slot to secure the flexible band to the band clamp;
- and
- cutting and removing excess length of the flexible band near the band clamp,
- wherein the tensioner includes:
- a first handle assembly;
- a second handle assembly configured to move relative to the first handle assembly;
- a spool assembly disposed between the first handle assembly and the second handle assembly, the spool assembly configured to receive the flexible band;
- and
- an adjustable head movably fixated to the first handle assembly, wherein the adjustable head is configured to be configured to be adjusted in a plurality of angled orientations with respect to the first handle assembly.
A method for performing spinal fixation surgery, said comprising:
- providing a band clamp;
- engaging a band clamp inserter to the band clamp;
- providing a flexible band;
- feeding a first free end of the flexible band through the band clamp;
- passing the first free end of the flexible band around bony anatomy of the posterior spine creating a loop around bone;
- passing the first free end of the flexible band back through a band slot of the band clamp;
- positioning the band clamp along a spinal rod such that the spinal rod is accepted into a rod slot of the band clamp;
- tightening a first threaded locking component in the band clamp to secure the spinal rod in the rod slot to the band clamp;
- tensioning, via a tensioner, the flexible band by providing a tensile force to the first free end of the flexible band thereby causing the loop to become tight around the bony anatomy;
- tightening the second threaded locking component in the band clamp to force a saddle into contact with the flexible band in the band slot to secure the flexible band to the band clamp;
- and
- cutting and removing excess length of the flexible band near the band clamp,
- wherein the tensioner includes:
- a first handle assembly;
- a second handle assembly configured to move relative to the first handle assembly;
- a spool assembly disposed between the first handle assembly and the second handle assembly, the spool assembly configured to receive the flexible band;
- and
- an adjustable head movably fixated to the first handle assembly, wherein the adjustable head is configured to be configured to be adjusted in a plurality of angled orientations with respect to the first handle.
