A method performed by a processor comprising a neural processing unit, wherein the method comprises:

• obtaining, by a handling unit of the neural processing unit, a description of a task that involves data in a multi-dimensional tensor in a storage;
• issuing, by the handling unit to a storage access controller, invocation data to read multi-dimensional bricks from the tensor, wherein the multidimensional bricks comprise a brick of primary data read from a first segment of the tensor and a brick of auxiliary data read from a second segment of the tensor;
• receiving, by the storage access controller, the invocation data from the handling unit;
• identifying, by the storage access controller, a location of the brick of primary data in the storage using one or more stride of the primary data in one or more dimension of the tensor,
• loading, by the storage access controller, the brick of primary data from the identified location in the storage,
• determining, by the storage access controller, one or more virtual strides for one or more dimensions of the auxiliary data based on the one or more strides of the primary data,
• identifying, by the storage access controller, a location of the brick of auxiliary data in the storage using the determined one or more virtual stride, and
• loading, by the storage access controller, the brick of the auxiliary data from the identified location in the storage.
