Abstract
Devices and methods establish and facilitate retrograde or reverse flow blood circulation in the region of the carotid artery bifurcation in order to limit or prevent the release of emboli into the cerebral vasculature such as into the internal carotid artery. The methods are particularly useful for interventional procedures performed through a transcarotid approach or transfemoral into the common carotid artery.
Claims20
A reverse-flow neuroprotection system, comprising:
- an arterial access sheath configured to be introduced into an opening in a carotid artery and receive blood flow from the carotid artery;
- an adapter coupled to a proximal end of the arterial access sheath, the adapter comprising a first connector region including a valve and a second connector region;
- a shunt tube coupled to the first connector region and extending therefrom;
- a flow control assembly coupled to the shunt tube;
- a venous return device coupled to the flow control assembly;
- a proximal extension coupled to the second connector region;
- and
- wherein the proximal extension has a length sufficient to extend out of a fluoroscopic field during use of the reverse-flow neuroprotection system.
A system for treating a vascular region, the system comprising:
- an arterial access sheath configured to be introduced into an opening in a carotid artery and receive blood flow from the carotid artery;
- a Y-adapter coupled to a proximal end of the arterial access sheath, the Y-adapter comprising a first end region including a valve and a second end region;
- a flow shunt line configured to be coupled to the first end region;
- a proximal extension configured coupled to the second end region;
- and
- wherein the proximal extension has a length sufficient to extend out of a fluoroscopic field during use of the system.
