Abstract
A method for determining a characteristic of material at a target is provided. A target is illuminated with a pulsed light source. A fluorescence signal from the target when the pulsed light source is an “off” state is then sensed. Based on analysis of the fluorescence signal, a characteristic of material at the target is identified. A device can then be controlled based on the identified characteristic of the material at the target.
Claims15
A system comprising:
- a laser system configured to treat a target;
- a white light source at a proximal end of the system, the white light source being configured to illuminate white light to the target;
- a controller configured to periodically activate and deactivate the white light source and therefore switch the white light source between an on state and an off state, respectively;
- an illumination channel for delivering white light from the white light source to the target;
- an optical path, different from the illumination channel, for delivering a fluorescence signal from the target at a distal end of the system, the fluorescence signal being delivered in response to the white light illuminated thereon;
- and
- an optical detector for detecting the delivered fluorescence signal when the white light source is in the off state;
- wherein the controller is further configured to:
- analyze the detected fluorescence signal;
- and
- operate the laser system based at least in part on the analysis of the fluorescence signal.

An operating method of a system, the system comprising:
- a laser system configured to treat a target;
- a white light source at a proximal end of the system, the white light source being configured to illuminate white light to the target;
- a controller configured to control operation of the white light source;
- an illumination channel;
- an optical path different from the illumination channel;
- and
- a detector configured to detect a fluorescence signal, wherein the operating method comprises:
- delivering the white light to the target from the white light source via the illumination channel when the controller periodically activates and deactivates the white light source and therefore switches the white light source between an on state and an off state, respectively;
- delivering, via the optical path, a fluorescence signal from the target at a distal end of the system, the fluorescence signal being delivered in response to the white light illuminated thereon;
- detecting, with the optical detector, the delivered fluorescence signal when the white light source is in the off state;
- analyzing, with the controller, the detected fluorescence signal;
- and
- operating, with the controller, the laser system based at least in part on the analysis of the fluorescence signal.
