Abstract
A compact, open path cable pulling apparatus, having a low center of gravity, composed of two detachable, single person hand-portable components, and useful in either a vertical or horizontal configuration. The apparatus is competent to pull cable horizontally through space underground with a pulling force in the range of at least about 20 to 100 tons using low pressure flow hydraulics and has utility in the cable pulling industries, including in the drilling and horizontal directional drilling industries, and as part of a method for pulling cable through space, including pulling cable through space in the pipe bursting and trenchless pipe replacement industries.

A cable retaining device comprising:
- a releasable lever having a cable engaging surface, fasteners for securing said lever in a channel in which a cable occurs, and a positioning mechanism for moving said lever between a first position wherein said lever cable engaging surface contacts said cable and retains said cable in said channel, and a second position wherein said cable engaging surface is released from said cable and said cable is no longer retained in said channel by said lever.
The cable retaining device of claim 21 wherein said channel occurs in a device for pulling cable horizontally through space.
The cable retaining device of claim 22 wherein said channel comprises a mechanism for converting the direction of said cable from horizontal to vertical.
The cable retaining device of claim 22 wherein said direction converting mechanism comprises a pulley wheel and shaft assembly.
Dependencies are inferred from the claim text.
