Abstract
A flexible, compressible backer rod for metal roof panels to reduce aesthetically undesirable oil-canning and telegraphing is disclosed. The backer rod has a non-cylindrical profile and is at least as wide as its height. In some embodiments, the backer rod's metal engagement surface and the substrate engagement surface are generally flat. In other embodiments, one or both engagement surfaces may be slightly convex. The backer rod can be installed under metal roofs and metal siding.
Claims20
A backer rod for sheet metal panels installed over a substrate, the backer rod comprising a length of compressible material having a noncircular profile, said profile having a width that is greater than or equal to a height measured between a substrate engagement surface and a metal engagement surface.
A method of reducing oil canning on sectional sheet metal panels comprising:
- Providing a backer rod having a noncircular profile, a metal engagement surface, and a substrate engagement surface;
- Securing the metal engagement surface to the underside of a panel;
- and
- Fastening the panel to a substrate with the substrate engagement surface adjacent to the substrate.
A backer rod for sheet metal sections installed over a substrate, the backer rod comprising a uniform length of flexible and compressible closed cell foam, said backer rod having a noncircular profile, a width, a height measured between a substrate engagement surface and a metal engagement surface, wherein the width is at least as wide as the height.
