Abstract
An ankle-foot orthosis forming a monolithic structure and include at least two different material components. The first material component has at least one tape layer consisting of a continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite, and a second polymeric material component surrounds at least in part the tape and includes a thermoplastic material into which the first material component is embedded. A resin material of the first material component is bonded to the second polymeric material component.
Claims20
An ankle-foot orthosis, comprising:
- wherein the body comprises a polymeric structure extending between the footplate and the leg portion;
- wherein a reinforcement segment is embedded within at least a portion of the body and comprises continuous fibers in a thermoplastic matrix;
- and
An ankle-foot orthosis, comprising;
- a polymeric material molded to form the footplate, the ankle portion, and the leg portion;
- a reinforcement segment embedded within the structure and comprising continuous fibers in a thermoplastic matrix and extending along at least a portion of the leg portion;
- wherein the footplate includes a contoured footbed dimensioned to receive a plantar surface of a user’s foot.
A method for making an ankle-foot orthosis, comprising the steps of;
- placing the reinforcement segment into a mold defining a footplate region, an ankle region, and a leg region;
- molding a polymeric material in the mold so that the polymeric material surrounds the reinforcement segment and forms the footplate region, the ankle region, and the leg region as an integrated molded structure;
- allowing the polymeric material to flow around the reinforcement segment so that the reinforcement segment becomes secured within the molded structure;
- and
- forming the footplate region with a contoured footbed and a heel region configured to transfer loads toward the ankle region during use.
