Aircraft having reverse thrust capabilities

A flight controller for an aircraft having reverse thrust capabilities, the flight controller comprising:

• a processor;
• a memory coupled to the processor;
• and
• instructions stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the flight controller to:
• receive, while the aircraft is operating in a low-speed flight mode, an aircraft datum from a sensor attached to a pilot control at an initial time, wherein the initial time occurs when a flight component of the aircraft produces a positive thrust in a first thrust direction;
• initiate, while the aircraft is operating in the low-speed flight mode, a reverse thrust command as a function of the aircraft datum at a subsequent time, wherein the reverse thrust command causes the flight component to enter a thrust reversal region comprising a regenerative drag operation and produce a negative thrust in a second thrust direction opposite the first thrust direction, and the subsequent time occurs temporally after the initial time;
• initiate, at the subsequent time, a reverse torque command of the flight component as a function of the aircraft datum;
• and
• command the flight component to enter a speed reversal region comprising a dissipative drag operation configured to push air against a forward motion of the aircraft.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor of a flight controller, cause the flight controller to perform a method for providing reverse thrust capabilities to an aircraft, the method comprising:

• receiving, while the aircraft is operating in a low-speed flight mode, an aircraft datum from a sensor attached to a pilot control at an initial time, wherein the initial time occurs when a flight component of the aircraft produces a positive thrust in a first thrust direction;
• initiating, while the aircraft is operating in the low-speed flight mode, a reverse thrust command as a function of the aircraft datum at a subsequent time, wherein the reverse thrust command causes the flight component to enter a thrust reversal region comprising a regenerative drag operation and produce a negative thrust in a second thrust direction opposite the first thrust direction, and the subsequent time occurs temporally after the initial time;
• initiating, at the subsequent time, a reverse torque command of the flight component as a function of the aircraft datum;
• and
• commanding the flight component to enter a speed reversal region comprising a dissipative drag operation configured to push air against a forward motion of the aircraft.
