Abstract
Provided is a lithium battery, wherein the battery comprises an anode, a cathode, wherein the cathode comprises one or more transition metals, an electrolyte, and a porous separator interposed between the cathode and anode, wherein the separator comprises an anionic compound. Also provided are methods of manufacturing such batteries.

A lithium-ion battery comprising:
- an electrode,
- a separator in contact with a first side of the electrode, and
- a current collector layer in contact with a second side of the electrode, wherein at least a portion of the separator is wider than the electrode and the current collector layer such that the electrode and current collector layer do not overlie said portion, and
- a polymer layer disposed on said portion such that the electrode and current collector layer do not overlie the polymer layer.
