Va ecmo with pulmonary artery ventilation

A method of providing veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation comprising:

• inserting a dual lumen drainage cannula through a single insertion site in a patient's vasculature, the dual lumen drainage cannula having a first drainage tube with first drainage apertures, and a second drainage tube with second drainage apertures, wherein the first and second drainage tubes are coaxially connected;
• positioning the first drainage apertures within the patient's right atrium;
• positioning the second drainage apertures within the patient's pulmonary artery;
• withdrawing blood simultaneously from the right atrium and pulmonary artery;
• oxygenating the withdrawn blood;
• and
• returning the oxygenated blood to the patient's vasculature.

A method of unloading a patient's heart during veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation comprising:

• inserting a dual lumen drainage cannula through a single access site in a patient, the dual lumen drainage cannula having a first drainage tube with a plurality of first drainage apertures, and a second drainage tube with a plurality of second drainage apertures;
• positioning the plurality of first drainage apertures to drain blood from the patient's right atrium;
• positioning the plurality of second drainage apertures to drain blood from the patient's pulmonary artery;
• withdrawing blood through both sets of drainage apertures;
• pumping the withdrawn blood through an oxygenator;
• and
• delivering the oxygenated blood back to the patient's vasculature.
